Hollywood's SPIDER-MAN outperforms Bollywood film MAXIMUM

It is one of those rare weeks where a Hollywood venture, SPIDERMAN, has dominated Bollywood, but a not so big project, Kabeer Kaushik's MAXIMUM, and the Veena Malik starrer DAAL MEIN KUCH KAALA HAI.

Without going into the details of SPIDERMAN (including dubbed versions), in a nutshell the film has embarked upon a predictably bumper start across India (barring Bihar and East Punjab). The film is all set to create new records for Hollywood ventures in India.

In case of the Naseer-Sonu starrer, MAXIMUM, the film is poor at the multiplexes (below 10 percent), and very ordinary at single screens of the Hindi belt and smaller centers of Maharashtra, but somewhat better at Hyderabad, Allahabad and Patna. Some single screens of the interiors are better at around 25 percent. The other release of the week, DAAL MEIN KUCH KAALA HAI, is an unmitigated disaster.

Meanwhile, last week's GANGS OF WASSEYPUR has managed a decent first week netting around 17.50 crore from India. The advantage that the Anurag Kashyap directed film carries is the very reasonable budget, and so in the end count it will be a profitable venture.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the Shahid-Priyanka starrer, TERI MERI KAHAANI, which has netted 23 crore during the opening week, and it is even 4-5 crore less than Shahid's last solo starrer, MAUSAM!

Given the high procurement cost of the all India distributor (Wave), the film has failed commercially, and it is bad news for writer-director-producer Kunal Kohli. The only bright spot is that TERI MERI KAHAANI has done quite well in the Overseas, though only in the US.
